I have a fully working printer which is surplus to requirements. It is an OKI B430DN. The only reason I replaced it was that I needed a printer with a document feeder for scanning.

Please let me know if you’d like it. First come first served!

March 2012 Budget Summary

Well, there goes another Budget where the stimulus for smaller businesses was once again lacking. Why do they insist on reducing the corporation tax rate for larger businesses when it is smaller businesses who really need the help?

The one upside is that a lot of families who thought they were going to lose Child Benefit will still get it as long as neither party earns more than £50,000. If either party earns more than £60,000, it is lost completely and there is a sliding scale between the two figures where it is gradually withdrawn.

I’ve got one copy of QuickBooks Pro 2012 to download from QuickBooks’ website and for which I can then give you the licence number and installation key code.

As a special Christmas bargain, this is available for £90 plus VAT, a huge saving on the regular price.

I will update this posting once the item has been sold.

UPDATE 13 MARCH 2012: Phoenix Communication Services Limited have purchased the download copy of QuickBooks 2012. They are voice & data system engineers and consultants based in Worcestershire, but basically, if you have any IT problem, they can help or know someone who can!

The Red Envelope

This is for you to return your monthly or quarterly book keeping information to us. Once we receive a Red Envelope from you, we will send you another one ready for the next batch of information.

We hope that you find this useful. We believe that putting your information into the Red Envelope as soon as you’ve dealt with it will help you keep your relevant paperwork together and once it is in there, you can forget about it (other than posting the envelope to us of course!).

Please do provide us with feedback as to whether you like the idea and whether the envelopes are of a suitable quality to safely convey your information to us. We will use this feedback to drive any future improvements to the design.

CostCo are currently selling QuickBooks Pro 2010 for a very good price of £104.99 plus VAT until the 22nd May 2011.This is a very good price so if you have an older version of QuickBooks, now is the time to upgrade. QuickBooks 2011 is on sale in America at the moment so will be coming to the UK within the next few months, but we still think it is worth upgrading now at this price.

Can you believe we’re nearly into April already? You have only a few days to act before the tax year end:

If you’re a sole trader, consider buying any equipment you need now rather than waiting until after 5th April. Similar for any companies with a 31 March year end.
Make a pension contribution into your personal pension scheme, particularly if you are a higher rate taxpayer as this extends your basic rate band, saving you tax.
Start collating your tax information for your accountant, some information such as your P60 won’t be available for a while, but you can start collating details of interest and dividends in the year now.

Here is our summary of the main points of the Budget held yesterday, 23rd March 2011. The main point I think the Government is missing is that small businesses need as much help as possible at the moment. Banks are more reluctant to lend to them and they are really being squeezed.

The rise in National Insurance is still going ahead and whilst the corporation tax rate from 1 April 2011 fell to 20% from 21%, the rate for larger businesses has gone down by 2% with a further 1% decrease each year until it reaches 23%. It seems that the Government put supporting larger businesses at the forefront and don’t consider what a boost it would be for the economy to give small businesses a real shot in the arm.

HMRC can charge a penalty of up to £3,000 if it believes a company isn’t keeping adequate records. Revenue inspectors are set to carry out an extra 50,000 random investigations this this year so you need to ensure that you are complying with the Revenue’s best practice guidance.

Tax filing deadline tomorrow!

The last filing date for personal tax returns for the year ended 5 April 2010 is tomorrow, 31st January 2011. If you miss this deadline, you will face a £100 late filing penalty unless the tax you owe as at 31 January 2011 is less than £100 as the penalty cannot exceed the amount of tax due. So, if you pay an estimate of your tax, but you’re £60 short, then you’d have to pay the £60 tax plus a £60 penalty.

If you have yet to pay your tax due tomorrow, then it isn’t too late. The Revenue don’t accept same day payments from banks, so the only option is use the BillPay feature with your debit or credit card (a fee applies if you use a credit card).

Personally, I have 6 tax returns still to be completed and a further 3 which have been done but not yet authorised by clients to be filed. I can see tomorrow being a very busy day!
